Seven Chorale-Poems for the Seven Last Words of Christ Charles Tournemire (1935)

David Gammie (organ)

Admission free

For our Lenten Musical Meditation this year, David plays one of the most profound, dramatic and moving works ever written for the organ, the Seven Chorale-Poems for the Seven Last Words of Christ, composed in 1935 by the devout French Catholic organist Charles Tournemire. This extraordinary work was inspired by the writings of Tournemire’s favourite ‘Catholic Revival’ authors, Joris-Karl Huysmans and Ernest Hello, by the architecture and symbolism of the great Gothic cathedrals, and by the music of the mediaeval church and the music of ancient India. David will give a short introductory talk, and William Griffiths will preface each piece with a brief Gospel reading.
