Well, those who left immediately after “On Jordan’s Bank” at the 11.15 Mass this Sunday missed a treat: a fantastic, flawless, rendition of Bach’s Toccata and Fugue in D minor. It was, in a word, awesome: I use the word in its traditional meaning of “filling one with awe/wonder” rather than the modern teenage slang way. I noticed that many members of the choir stayed to witness it. Good for them – and for the remainder of the congregation who stayed to listen – and applaud it – at the end.
I think we are uniquely blessed at Sacred Heart with our musicians and choristers. The Bach Toccata was of a standard that people would pay good money to hear in the West End or South Bank. Here in SW19 we get it for free. Although, if there was a special collection for our music department, I for one would be prepared to dig a little deeper in my pocket.
John,
Thank you so much for your comments about David’s rendition of the Toccata and Fugue and music generally. I agree that it is a pity people are so quick to leave – the organ voluntary is part of the mass and very often complements the theme of the mass. Perhaps one day, we might have a collection for the music – we do need to update our library a bit!
